Experimental reproduction of mantle earthquakes analogues by antigorite dehydration & comparison with natural pseudotachylytes

Deep Earthquakes : from the Lab to the Field

Thesis supervisors : Alexandre Schubnel & Nadège Hilairet .

Field supervisor Loïc Labrousse

Experimental geophysics :
- synthesis of serpentinized peridotite samples in piston-cylinder ;
- dehydration-deformation experiments on serpentinized peridotite samples using a Griggs-type apparatus ;
- dehydration-deformation experiments on serpentinized peridotite samplesusing a D-DIA appartus equipped with acoustics under Synchrotron radiation.

… to understand how deserpentinization induces mechanical instabilities and shear failure.

Field geology :
- comparison between mantle pseudotachylytes and experimental dehydration-driven pseudotachylytes.

… to show whether our experimental results reproduce natural processes in the same pressure-temperature conditions.
